The Insights for Action seminar series explores how researchers and practitioners within and beyond Oxford are using research insights to drive social change.
In this seminar we will discuss ‘refugee entrepreneurship’ – with focus on the value of entrepreneurship interventions in this field, the innovation potential of entrepreneurs with a migrant or refugee background, how social impact organisations support refugees and migrants through entrepreneurship interventions, and what insights this field offers about the leadership, organising, and funding approaches needed to facilitate sustainable, innovative, and impactful social change.
The seminar will take place 15:30-16:30, followed by a reception from 16:30-17:30.
Speakers:
Dr Asma Naimi is a writer and social entrepreneur who is passionate about combining knowledge and creativity to create social change. Her work focuses on the role of social entrepreneurship in tackling large scale societal challenges that span borders, such as migration, poverty, inequality, and injustice. After completing her PhD at Esade Business School, Asma founded ‘Changemaker Studio’ which focuses on the power of storytelling for social change, and surfacing social entrepreneurship at the margins. She is also Project Lead for the All-in Program, which aims to create more inclusion in the social entrepreneurship movement. Previously, Asma has collaborated with Ashoka, a leading international organization that promotes changemakers, and worked as a senior consultant for PwC in the field of international development, social entrepreneurship, and corporate social responsibility.
Professor Farah Koedeih is an Associate Professor of Strategy at IESEG School of Management, and a visiting professor at Aalto University of Business. She received her PhD in Management from ESSEC Business School. Currently, her research investigates how social ventures and non-governmental organizations support marginalized individuals including refugees and migrants through entrepreneurship and technology. The research examines structures and practices that create social value by supporting the integration of vulnerable and marginalized individuals into mainstream societies.
Moderator:
Professor Marya Besharov is Professor of Organisations and Impact and Academic Director of the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship. Her research and teaching focus on leadership, social impact, and hybrid organisations. She engages with leaders and organisations worldwide to help them manage competing demands of social impact and financial performance. Marya received a BA in Social Studies, an MA in Sociology, and a PhD in Organisational Behaviour from Harvard University. She also holds an MBA from Stanford University.
